Introduction Application of a Hierarchical Habitat Unit Classification System: Stream Habitat and Salmonid Distribution in Ward Creek, Southeast Alaska M.D. Bryant, B.E. Wright, and B.J. Davies A hierarchical classification system separating stream habitat into habitat units defined by stream morphology and hydrology was used in a pre-enhancement stream survey. The system separates habitat units into macrounits, mesounits, and microunits and includes a separate evaluation of instream cover that also uses the hierarchical scheme. This paper presents an application of the system to a preenhancement survey of habitat and salmonid populations. Application of this method accompanied by snorkel counts of fish allowed us to determine habitat area, salmonid densities within habitat units, and an estimate of the total salmonid population by species. Differences in salmonid densities among mesohabitat units and among microhabitat units were detected with this method. The method is useful to rapidly describe and stratify stream habitat to determine salmonid distribution and abundance during stream surveys.

Stream Physical Characteristics Impact Habitat Quality for Pacific Salmon in Two Temperate Coastal Watersheds

Climate warming is likely to cause both indirect and direct impacts on the biophysical properties of stream ecosystems especially in regions that support societally important fish species such as Pacific salmon. We studied the seasonal variability and interaction between stream temperature and DO in a low-gradient, forested stream and a glacial-fed stream in coastal southeast Alaska to assess h...

Coho Salmon in Karst-dominated Streams

Study area.-All the study streams are on the northern quarter of Prince of Wales Island (Figure 1) and traverse a mixture of karst and nonkarst geology. Some streams are fed directly by resurgence from limestone caves, whereas others are fed by overland flow. Hecata Limestone and Bay of Pillars are the major karst formations (Wissmar et al. 1997). Many of the streams flow along contact zones be...

Effects of Woody Debris on Anadromous Salmonid Habitat, Prince of Wales Island, Southeast Alaska

-The effects of woody debris on anadromous salmonid habitat in eight streams on Prince of Wales Island, southeast Alaska, were investigated by comparing low-gradient (1-9%) firstor second-order streams flowing through either spruce-hemlock forests or 6-10-year-old clearcuts, and by observing changes after debris was selectively removed from clear-cut reaches. Woody debris decreased the rate of ...

Habitat Simulation Technique as a Powerful Tool for Instream Flow Needs Assessment and River Ecosystem Management

Instream flow needs (IFN) assessment studies are performed to provide guidelines for stream water management and to assess the impacts of different water projects such as weirs, dams and stream diversions on the available fish habitat. The physical habitat simulation is one of the IFN assessment methods and also a powerful tool in management of river ecosystem that has not become a common metho...

Prediction of potential habitat distribution of Artemisia sieberi Besser using data-driven methods in Poshtkouh rangelands of Yazd province

The present study aimed to model potential habitat distribution of A. sieberi, and its ecological requirements using generalized additive model (GAM) and classification and regression tree (CART) in in the Poshtkouh rangelands of Yazd province. For this purpose, pure habitats of the species was delineated and the species presence data was recorded by the systematic-randomize sampling method. Us...
